Building a Catalog of Regional Initiatives
Regional cooperation is blossoming in Pennsylvania. Despite a general sense that the opposite is true, Pennsylvania communities across the state - from Lycoming to York to Erie and Berks - are exploring opportunities to work together. Driven by the desire to provide better services more efficiently, preserve farmland and open space, and attract new jobs, business, civic, and political leaders are experimenting with cooperation.
The Governor's Center for Local Government Services has documented that there are approximately 750 multi-municipal plans underway in municipalities across the state. Some of these initiatives are included in our catalog. Information on others is available through the Center for Local Government Services, which can be accessed
here.
RenewPA is in the process of collecting examples of regional initiatives from around Pennsylvania. Examples include multi-municipal cooperation, such as councils of government working together to share purchasing and services, comprehensive planning processes, regional police forces, and cooperative urban revitalization and economic development. Other examples are transit-oriented design and governance reform.
RenewPA's catalog, which can be accessed below, is just a sampling of initiatives occuring around the state, and is a work in progress. If you know of a project that you think should be included, please contact Andrea McCormick at
amccormick@10000friends.org to submit it.
